Pitcher-needy Blue Jays acquire Seabold from Tigers in exchange for Vasquez

The Toronto Blue Jays completed a trade with the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday to acquire relief pitcher Connor Seabold in exchange for lefty pitcher Juanmi Vasquez.

The Blue Jays were in need of pitching help with Dylan Cease, Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber, Joe Mantiply, Tommy Nance, Yimi Garcia, Jose Berrios, Cody Ponce and Bowden Francis all on the injured list.

Seabold, 30, has made 11 appearances for the Tigers this season, with a 3.45 earned-run average over 15.2 innings pitched. He was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Sunday.

The reliever was with the Blue Jays in Spring Training after signing an off-season minor-league contract, but was cut before the beginning of the season.

To make room for Seabold on the roster, the Blue Jays moved Berrios, who had Tommy John surgery earlier in May and will miss the entire season, to the 60-day injured list.

Vasquez, 22, was pitching for High-A Vancouver in 2026, with a 5.87 ERA and 35 strikeouts over 23.0 innings.

Seabold is a veteran of five MLB seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta Braves and Tigers. He has a 7.28 ERA and a 2-11 record over 51 career MLB games (19 starts) and 134.2 innings pitched.

The Blue Jays entered Wednesday’s action third in the American League East at 26-29.
