Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer became the 11th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,500 strikeouts on Wednesday.

The moment came when he struck out Kyle Schwarber looking in the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies.

It was his first start for the Blue Jays since returning from the Injured List due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. Scherzer was placed on the IL on April 25.

Scherzer struck out four in 3.1 innings to bring his career total to 3,503. He is five strikeouts behind Walter Johnson for tenth all-time.

After striking out the first two batters he faced, the 41-year-old righty gave up home runs to Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm as he allowed five runs on five hits with three walks before exiting the game.

Scherzer has a 9.82 ERA in six starts for the Blue Jays in 2026.
