A first World Cup qualification since 1998 for Austria means a chance to improve on Round of 16 finishes at both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

A fourth-place finish at their first finals in 1934 was followed up by a third-place finish at their second appearance in 1954 but they have not progressed into the knockout stage at any of their five World Cups since.

Ralf Rangnick is the man who has steered them to The Americas – despite interest from Bayern in April 2024 he remained loyal to the national team, leading them to the European Championships and now to their first World Cup finals in 28 years.
