It’s now five World Cups without lifting the trophy for five-time champions Brazil who have not reached the final since beating Germany in 2002 (but have qualified for all 23 editions) – they have never gone six consecutive finals without lifting the trophy. Their 2022 campaign once again ended at the quarter-final stage, as it has in four of the last five finals, beaten on penalties against Croatia in Qatar.

Their 2026 qualifying campaign ended with just 8 wins, their fewest in an 18-match campaign.

Appointed Carlo Ancelotti as head coach in May, his first foray into national team management and his first move out of Europe as a player or coach. He’ll be hoping to add to his 24 major honours in management which include five Champions Leagues.
