The 2023 AFCON winners are back on the biggest stage having qualified for their first World Cup since 2014.

A first regional title since 2015 ended a barren spell for The Elephants who failed to progress beyond the quarter-final of AFCON, whilst also failing to qualify for the World Cup, between 2017 and 2022.

Head coach Emerse Fae, appointed in January 2024, featured for the national team at their first ever World Cup in 2006. They failed to progress from the group stage in Germany, something they repeated in 2010 and 2014.

Were one of two nations who kept a clean sheet throughout CAF qualifying, along with Tunisia.

Previous World Cup appearances (3):

2014: Group stage (Colombia, Greece, Japan)

2010: Group stage

2006: Group stage
