Egypt have qualified for just a second World Cup since 1990 – they were knocked out, pointless, in 2018 – and had to turn to their all-time leading scorer Hossam Hassan to lead them to the 2026 finals.

Appointed in February 2024, Hassan started all three matches for The Pharaohs in 1990 and his record of 69 goals is being hunted down by Mohamed Salah (63 prior to Uzbekistan friendly) – the Liverpool legend will look to leave his mark on the world’s biggest stage.

They are yet to win a match in their previous seven matches at the finals.

Bizarrely, Egypt qualified for the first ever World Cup in 1930 but missed their boat from Marseille to South America due to a storm when travelling to France.

Previous World Cup appearances (3):

2018: Group stage (Uruguay, Russia, Saudi Arabia)

1990: Group stage

1934: Preliminary round
