Following a disappointing group stage exit in 2018 (where they were eliminated due to an inferior disciplinary record), Senegal reached the Round of 16 in Qatar, losing 3-0 to England and are yet to repeat their 2002 quarter-final finish.

They also reached the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, unable to reclaim their 2021 title.

The second-highest ranked African side (behind Morocco), they are now coached by Pape Thiaw who made one appearance for their famous 2002 side, starting the 2-1 Round of 16 win v Denmark.

Sadio Mane, their all-time leading scorer, remains the focal point – he netted five times in qualifying.

Previous World Cup appearances (3):

2022: Round of 16 (0-3 v England)

2018: Group stage

2002: Quarter-final
